ABOUT ASHA
The Full Story
Asha, a humanitarian and soul singer from Singapore, mesmerises audiences with her strong stage presence and soulful vocals. Recognised for hitting notes with rich, dynamic tones, she has earned respect both at home and abroad.
In her early days, Asha embraced a quirky style, performing in funky hats and clothes. However, about sixteen years ago, she made a bold statement by transitioning to sarees. This shift was an act of resistance against racism and the societal pressure to conform to a specific image to be recognised as a great artist. In 2013, she further amplified her protest by conceptualising headpieces to pair with her sarees. Her distinctive look is completed with her choice of socks and canvas shoes, inspired by the traditional footwear of Geishas, adding yet another unique element to her style.
Theatre enthusiasts still recall Asha's powerful solo in the musical "RENT," which brought the audience to their feet and soccer fans will remember her a cappella rendition of Liverpool Football Club's anthem, "You'll Never Walk Alone," performed in front of a 55,000-strong crowd at the Singapore National Stadium. Yet, it was her performance at Singapore's National Day celebration that established her as a pocket-sized powerhouse on the national stage.
Among her many accolades are the Radio Music Award (DJ’s CHOICE – ‘Best Local Act’) and the Compass Award (‘Top Local Pop Song’ for "Dorian Bay"). With multiple radio hits and a recording contract with CreAsian Records, she was named one of Singapore’s Top Ten Talents by Arts Magazine. Her alma mater, Lasalle-SIA College of the Arts, also recognised her as one of their 'Contemporary Heroes.'
On the international stage, Asha's first single, "Oblivion," in collaboration with Swedish duo SUMO & BANGANA, was released through Rasmus Faber’s Farplane Records. Her follow-up singles, "Carry Me Over" and "What's The Figure," produced alongside Singaporean producers Jason Tan and RY, were released under the Italian label Gotta Keep Faith Records. Her subsequent release, "Fast Forward," was produced with French DJ Greg Gauthier and released via Qalomota Records. With a selective approach to collaborations, Asha strategises her releases for necessary and timely presence.
Beyond her music, Asha is the founder and owner of Pixiegroove Records, DNA (Discover New Artists), The Buddha Box and creator of Ah Poon. She recently launched a storytelling segment on YouTube titled "Stories Without Pictures," where she shares her original stories with children, in support of Congo. Additionally, she is hosting, iTHAL, a magazine on her website, dedicated to promoting and celebrating outstanding artists from around the world.
Besides singing and acting, Asha encourages everyone to explore vegetarian/vegan recipes by sharing her insights and recipes on her food blog, "Stirring Up Trouble," featured on her website. As a drama graduate from QUT, Asha thrives in the realms of performance and writing, is constantly seeking innovative ways to express her creativity and inspire others.
Looking ahead, Asha's upcoming music releases will be with Digital Vinyl Recordings and DJ/Producer Josh Grooves. Pixiegroove Records is also set to release the second single 'Light' by BODEE, the label's emerging artist. Asha continues to forge on without losing momentum.
