SEPTEMBER 2024
OFF YOUR ROCKER
With inspiration drawn from Kendrick Lamar's 'Humble' and M.I.A's 'BAD GIRLS',
LIsA FROM THE Korean GROUP 'BLACKPINK',
DEBUTS as a solo artist WITH THE ATTENTION-GRABBING 'Rockstar'.
K-Pop and Bollywood are notorious for telling us that 'we are not good enough'. A once insular Hollywood championed this tenet and the changes within the business have not happened easily. Why fight for more in a Caucasian space? Is America Caucasian? So can Hollywood be Caucasian only? That a 'BET Awards' or 'Black Girls Rock' exists, is questionable. Who really owns them? On the surface, they appear to be Black-owned
but when you look beyond the obvious, they are White-owned. Whites appoint Blacks
and give them titles and ownership of subsidiary companies that are controlled by Whites. This causes division. With many people asking 'Why is a BET needed' or 'Imagine if a
White or Asian person does it, what would the Blacks say'?
These troublemakers benefit from our disaffection.
In an impeccable world, everyone should be celebrated in equal spaces. In those
spaces, there should be well-defined categories to honour great work. Which brings
Lisa's new video 'Rockstar' into focus. Is it great work? Yes. It is a commanding and
superbly choreographed visual to an aggressive pop tune. It looks and sounds like an updated version of a Lamar video and an M.I.A song. According to comments by
Lisa's fans, she is said to be in her natural skin tone. From what can be seen in the
teaser shots, she seems to have tanner skin. The whole get-up screams Tyla and comes across as a tad insincere and opportunistic. Vocally, she is not top-tier. She is at best,
above average. You could have put any other voice out there on the tune and it would have still made waves because of the five-star arrangement and mastering
which hit the ground running.
There was so much money pumped into this video alone that labelling
her a 'plant' would not be a stretch. Fans believe that she owns the management
company, LLOUD, but it is a subsidiary of RCA Records. RCA have made her the CEO
and have called it a "partnership". American record labels control and dominate the
mainstream music market making RCA Records a force in the industry.
To really make a difference, Lisa could have easily started something independently.
Why has she not? She may not reach the heights that RCA can take her to
but it would not matter, if art is the focus. If fame and power are what artists want,
then they will never care to see who they stomp on to get to the top.
What does a plant do?
Distract. Distract everyone tuned in from what is going on in the world by being "inclusive". Genocide or systemic racism cannot possibly be happening because "Look! We're
inclusive!". It is cleverly employed to create an illusory changing world. Look up the involvement of the C.I.A in music and you will find that this is not hyperbole.
What does it take to become a rockstar?
With so much being used to hide issues that are going on globally, would it be moral to aspire to reach the heights of Hollywood? Many do not care. Social media too has created
more narcissists and the world's problems worsen in tandem as more chase a dream that
is designed to destroy the dreams of millions in resource-rich countries.
So, what does it take to become a rockstar?
With ignorance being inexcusable, a facile human being.
